Preview: Reading vs Sunderland, Sat 15:00

Reading will be full of confidence after their stunning late comeback against Chelsea in midweek, but they’ll have their work cut out this week against Martin O’Neill’s resurgent Black Cats.

Sunderland players celebrate finding the net against Reading earlier this season.

Team News:

Reading:

  • Jason Roberts (hip), and Alex McCarthy (shoulder) are Reading’s only definite absentees through injury this week.
  • Noel Hunt is manager Brian McDermott’s only other concern, and he’ll be given a late fitness test ahead of the match.
  • In form striker Adam Le Fondre has scored 5 goals in 3 games after coming off of the bench.
  • Reading boss McDermott must decided whether to play the Englishman from the start, or to maintain his super sub status.

Sunderland:

  • Wes Brown and Lee Cattermole (both knee), Carlos Cuellar and Danny Rose (both hamstring) make up the long term injury list for Sunderland.
  • Aside from that, Martin O’Neill has no injury concerns and will hand a debut to Deadline Day acquisition Danny Graham up front.
  • Graham is likely to partner Steven Fletcher up front, with Stephane Sessegnon in the supporting role.

When these sides met in the Premier League back in December, Sunderland ran out convincing winners at the Stadium of Light. James McLean, Steven Fletcher, and Stephane Sessessgnon found the net to give the Black Cats a 3-0 win over the Royals.

The Stats:

  • Sunderland and Reading have met 18 times in all competitions with both sides enjoying seven wins apiece.
  • Sunderland have won just three of their last 19 Premier League away games (W3 D7 L9), but those three wins have come in the last six road trips (W3 L3).
  • Reading striker Adam Le Fondre has scored more substitute goals than any other Premier League player this season (6).
  • Le Fondre’s last three Premier League goals have been assisted by Hope Akpan.
  • Without Le Fondre’s goals this season Reading would be 10 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table.
  • Reading have scored six goals from indirect free-kick moves this season, more than any other side.
  • The Royals have thrown away 20 points from leading positions this season, only fellow promoted side Southampton have lost more (22).
  • Each of Reading’s last four Premier League games have gone over 2.5 goals.
  • If the season had started on Boxing Day, Reading would be in sixth place, one point ahead of Sunderland in ninth.

Danny Graham swaps Wales for North East

Swansea striker's wishes are granted as he signs for Sunderland on Transfer Deadline Day

Danny Graham transfer.png

Out-of-favour Swansea striker Danny Graham underwent a medical at Sunderland this afternoon. The front man has scored just three goals in 15 league appearances for Swansea since the arrival of new boss Michael Laudrup in the summer.

Completing a £5million three-and-a-half year deal, Graham contracted interest from numerous managers since announcing he wanted to leave the Welsh club; including Norwich, Middlesbrough and big spenders QPR.

“As soon as I heard about the interest from Sunderland I didn’t even have to consider any of the other options that were on the table,” he told Sunderland’s official website.

Born in Gateshead, Graham was clear that his commitment to the club would be questioned: “I’ve always given 100% no matter what team I play for and no matter who I play against,” he said.

“It’s up to me to show people I deserve to wear the Sunderland shirt and I’m excited about playing for a club as big as this,” he added.

Graham will wear the number nine shirt for Sunderland.

Preview: Sunderland vs Swansea, Tues 19:45

Swansea City have been in irresistible form of late, and having qualified for the League Cup final last week, their attention now turns to the Premier League where they take on Martin O’Neill’s resurgent Sunderland on Tuesday night.

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher celebrates scoring on his debut against the Swans earlier this season.

Team News:

Sunderland:

  • Sunderland are likely to once again be without Lee Cattermole, Wes Brown (both knee), Carlos Cuellar and Danny Rose (both hamstring).
  • Martin O’Neill will name a strong, fresh line-up after his side had the weekend off while the FA Cup took place.
  • The Black Cats boss could name the same side that defeated Wigan by 3 goals to 2 last Saturday, with two-goal hero Steven Fletcher starting up front once again.

Swansea City:

  • Kemy Agustien and Neil Taylor (both ankle) make up the long term injury list for Swansea.
  • Apart from those two, manager Michael Laudrup has a full strength side ahead of the trip to the Stadium of Light.
  • Swansea striker Danny Graham has been subject to a lot of transfer interest from Sunderland, and he’s unlikely to get the nod over Ki Sung-Yeung up front again this week.
  • Goalkeeper Michel Vorm will almost definitely come in to replace Gerhard Tremmel between the sticks, though Laudrup is likely to name an otherwise unchanged side from the team that edged past Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final.
  • New loan signing Roland Lamah will take a place on the bench, while winger Wayne Routledge could play his 150th Premier League game.

When these sides met in the Premier League back in September, Swansea witnessed a first half Steven Fletcher show at the Liberty Stadium. The Scotsman scored twice on his full debut for the Black Cats, sending them in 2-0 up at the break. Swansea then flew out of the traps in the second half, and goals from Wayne Routledge and Michu earned Michael Laudrup’s side a 2-2 draw.

The Stats:

  • Swansea are yet to beat Sunderland in the Premier League since arriving in the top flight last year, losing 1 and drawing 2 of their 3 matches.
  • Swansea’s last away win over the Black Cats came in November 1982. That 1-0 victory remains their only win in 12 league and cup visits to Wearside.
  • Sunderland have won 4 of their last 6 Premier League games.
  • The Black Cats are looking to record three consecutive league wins for the first time this season, having beaten West Ham and Wigan recently.
  • Martin O’Neill’s side have failed to win a league match this season in which they trailed at half-time (D1, L6).
  • Swansea are unbeaten in their last six league matches (W2, D4), their best unbeaten run in the top flight since 1982.
  • The Swans have conceded just nine goals away from home this season – they are the only Premier League club not to have conceded double figures on the road.
  • Michael Laudrup’s boys are yet to lose a league match after opening the scoring, winning on eight of those nine occasions.

Preview: Wigan Athletic vs Sunderland, Sat 15:00

Martin O’Neill’s reformed Sunderland have won 4 of their last 7 Premier League matches and pushed themselves clear of the relegation zone in recent weeks. They’ll look to continue their strong run of form against a Wigan side that have won just 1 of their last 9.

Sunderland striker celebrates his goal that separated the sides when they last met in the Premier League.

Team News:

Wigan:

  • Antolin Alcaraz (groin) Albert Crusat (knee) Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) Piscu (hamstring) and Ben Watson (shin) make up the long term injury list for the Latics.
  • Wigan were hit with the blow that their defender Ivan Ramis will be missing for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
  • Ramis has been struggling with injury for months, and suffered his final blow of the season in the 1-1 draw with Fulham last weekend.
  • Wigan’s only other definite absentee is striker Arouna Kone, who has joined up with his Ivory Coast team-mates at the African Cup of Nations.
  • Manager Roberto Martinez will name the same side that featured in the draw at Craven Cottage, with goalscorer from that match Franco Di Santo up front.

Sunderland:

  • Wes Brown, Lee Cattermole (both knee), Carlos Cuellar and Danny Rose (both hamstring) will all miss out this week through injury.
  • Aside from that manager Martin O’Neill has no injury or suspension concerns and can name the same side that won against West Ham last week.
  • Sunderland front-man Steven Fletcher missed the Black Cats’ FA Cup replay loss against Bolton in midweek through illness, but he looks to have shaken it off this week.
  • Fletcher and Stephane Sessegnon will once again start up front for Sunderland, though Connor Wickham is chasing a place in the side.

When these sides met in the Premier League back in September, Sunderland won a fierce battle at the Stadium of Light to earn their first 3 points of the season. Black Cats’ striker Steven Fletcher scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for Martin O’Neill’s side.

The Stats:

  • Sunderland have won 3 of their last 4 matches against Wigan, scoring 4 goals on two of those occasions.
  • Previously, the Black Cats had won  just one of the first nine Premier League meetings with Wigan (W1 D3 L5).
  • Steven Fletcher has scored four goals in six Premier League appearances against Wigan; more than against any other opponent.
  • Wigan have won just one of their last nine Premier League games (W1 D2 L6).
  • Sunderland have won three and lost just one of their six Premier League games this season against teams currently in the bottom six of the table.
  • Sunderland have recovered just one point from losing positions in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other team.

Best Value Buys for Fantasy Football – Week 23

New year, but same old PlayUp Fantasy Football guru, giving you 4 low cost, high value players to get your team into shape in 2013.

Following us last week you would have bagged yourself a whopping 24 points from our 4 bargain buys – the Fantasy Football guru never disappoints!

Goalkeeper: £5.2m

Simon Mignolet (Sunderland) vs Wigan (A)

With the topsy-turvy season that Sunderland are having, you’d hardly expect their goalkeeper to be a wise pick for Fantasy Football… But how wrong you’d be! Belgian stopper Simon Mignolet has been on top form between the sticks for Sunderland this season, and is currently the second highest point scoring keeper in Fantasy Football. Mignolet kept an impressive clean sheet against West Ham last week, and we’re expecting the 24-year-old to do the same against a goal-shy Wigan side on Saturday afternoon.

Mignolet has kept 8 clean sheets already this season, and has made a staggering 87 registered saves on top of that. One of those clean sheets came against Saturday’s opponents Wigan Athletic earlier in the season, as the Black Cats ran out 1-0 winners on an easy day at the office for Mignolet.

Wigan have scored just 3 goals in their last 4 matches in all competitions, and after losing their top marksmen Arouna Kone to the African Cup of Nations last week, we expect that run to continue. The Latics have failed to find the net in 9 matches this season, the second highest of all the goal-shy sides in the top flight, behind Stoke City and Aston Villa (10). Meanwhile, Martin O’Neill’s resurgent Sunderland side have kept 3 clean sheets in their last 5 Premier League matches – and we’re tipping them to make it 4 from 6 on Saturday; giving Mignolet, and in turn you, lots of vital points this week.

Defender: £5.3m

Gareth McAuley (West Brom) vs Aston Villa (H)

Out of sorts Aston Villa can’t seem to catch a break at the moment; they’ve slumped into the relegation zone after a poor run of results, suffered Capital One Cup embarrassment at the hands of League Two Bradford City, and now face a tough trip to the Hawthorns against high-flying West Brom as they look to mount a recovery effort for their season.

Villa have lost 4 of their last 5 matches in the Premier League without finding the net, and we expect that run to get even worse when they visit Albion’s fortress, the Hawthorns this weekend.

Albion centre back Gareth McAuley has been an integral cog behind the club’s success this season, helping the Baggies to 5 clean sheets with continuous solid performances at the heart of defence. West Brom have won 7, drawn 1, and lost just 3 of their home matches this season in which the Northern Irish defender has featured, taking apart the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool in the process.

West Brom have won 2, and lost none of their last 4 league meetings with Aston Villa; conceding just 3 goals and keeping one clean sheet in that time. Paul Lambert’s relegation threatened Villains have won just twice away from home this season, and only a late Darren Bent strike saved them from defeat when these sides met in the league earlier in the season.

The Baggies will be desperate for a win on Saturday after suffering late heartbreak away at Reading last week, and what a perfect way to do it against your local rivals. Defensive leader Gareth McAuley will be giving his all to steer his side to victory, keep a clean sheet, and bag you some lovely cheap points in the process.

Midfielder: £5.6m

Raheem Sterling (Liverpool) vs Norwich City (H)

18-year-old Raheem Sterling has been a sensation for Liverpool since his emergence into the first team at the start of the year, and has risen from strength to strength in the top flight. The teenager has dazzled opponents on the wing with his quick feet and sublime vision, and he’ll hope to be on top form when Norwich City visit Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool have a sensational record against the Canaries in recent years, and in particular in the most recent year! The Reds produced a 3-0, and a 5-2 victory against Norwich in 2012, giving them their 6th and 7th victories over the East-Anglian club in just 8 matches. Sterling was still an unknown schoolboy when his club won 3-0 at the start of the year, but featured heavily in the 5-2 fixture, grabbing an assist in that match.

Young Raheem has scored 2 Premier League goals this season, and has added 5 assists to boot, making him the Reds’ second highest Fantasy Football point scoring midfielder behind captain Steven Gerrard… Though he is half the price!

Norwich City have lost 4, and drawn 1 of their last 5 Premier League games, and will arrive at Anfield with the fear of Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling tormenting their defence still overhanging from matches past. £5.6 million for a top class, top 6, high point scoring midfielder is a Fantasy Football no brainer! Transfer Raheem Sterling into your team this week and reap the point benefits.

Forward: £4.9m

Carlton Cole (West Ham United) vs QPR (H) and Arsenal (A)

It’s a double match week for West Ham in gameweek 23, with the Londoners facing two fierce capitol derbies against QPR and Arsenal. In a week where the Hammers will face two shaky sides, we’re tipping solo striker Carlton Cole to earn you points in abundance.

West Ham’s home form has been exemplary this season, picking up 6 wins and losing just twice in the Premier League. At home against QPR, the Irons have won 2 and lost none of their last 3 matches, with their last loss coming way back in 1993. When the sides met earlier in the season, a Carlton Cole inspired West Ham side ran out 2-1 winners against Rangers, with the big English striker grabbing an assist in that match.

West Ham’s midweek opponents Arsenal have lost 2 of their last 4 home games without scoring, and have looked increasingly vulnerable in recent weeks. With Carlton Cole on the prowl at the Emirates, the Gunners shaky form may just continue.

West Ham main striker, Andy Carroll is expected back in the next few weeks, but while he remains sidelined Cole will take responsibility of firing the Hammers up the table. Cole has scored twice and grabbed 3 assists since replacing the former Liverpool striker in the West Ham set-up, and while he’s rated at just £4.9 million, he’s a deal worth snapping up!

FA Cup Replay: Sunderland vs Bolton, Tues 19:45

Sunderland’s dramatic comeback from 2-0 down in the original tie has forced Dougie Freedman’s Bolton to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, a ground that’s been somewhat of a fortress in recent weeks.

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham finds the net to start the Black Cats' revival at the Reebok Stadium last weekend.

Team News:

Sunderland:

  • Lee Cattermole, Wes Brown (both knee), Carlos Cuellar and Danny Rose (both hamstring) make up the long term injury list for Martin O’Neill’s side.
  • Sunderland are likely to make a few changes to the side that impressively disposed of West Ham by three goals to nil at the weekend
  • New signing Alfred N’Diaye made his Premier League debut in that match as a substitute, but could feature from the start this week.
  • Striker Connor Wickham scored in the original fixture at the Reebok Stadium, and is likely to come in for either Steven Fletcher or Stephane Sessegnon, who will be given a rest.

Bolton Wanderers:

  • Bolton are likely to name the same side that drew 1-1 with Millwall at the weekend, listing a full strength side.
  • The only possible exception could be Marvin Sordell stepping in for 35-year-old Kevin Davies, who played 90 minutes of football at the weekend.
  • Sordell scored Bolton’s second goal of the afternoon against Sunderland last time out, and will hope for similar fortunes on Tuesday.

Preview: Sunderland vs West Ham, Sat 15:00

After a thrilling 2-2 draw with Bolton in the FA Cup last week, Martin O’Neill’s inconsistent Black Cats are chasing their first win of 2013, and they’ll fancy their chances against a Hammers side that haven’t picked up an away win since November.

Kevin Nolan celebrates his last minute goal when these sides met back in September.

Team News:

Sunderland:

  • Wes Brown, Lee Cattermole (both knee) and John O’Shea (hamstring) make up the long term injury list for the Black Cats.
  • Defenders Carlos Cuellar and Danny Rose are Sunderland’s only other doubts after the pair picked up hamstring injuries last weekend at Bolton.
  • Striker Connor Wickham scored in that match at the Reebok Stadium after coming on as a substitute, but could be included from the start this week.
  • Aside from that, manager Martin O’Neill has no injury or suspension concerns and will name a strong side against the Hammers.

West Ham:

  • Mohamed Diame (hamstring) Andy Carroll, George McCartney and Yossi Benayoun (all knee) make up the long term injury list for West Ham.
  • Carroll and Diame however, are nearing a return and could come back to first team action as soon as next weekend.
  • Joey O’Brien (hamstring) is the only other injury concern – he was replaced by the impressive Daniel Potts in the 2-2 draw with Man United last week, and will continue to be so if deemed unfit.
  • Joe Cole made his second Hammers’ debut to good effect against the Reds, grabbing both assists for West Ham’s goals. He will start again in midfield at the Stadium of Light.
  • Key defender Winston Reid was rested for the FA Cup clash with United, but he’s likely to come in to replace James Tomkins this week.

Preview: Liverpool vs Sunderland, Weds 19:45

Inconsistency vs inconsistency in the Premier League on Wednesday night, as hit and miss Liverpool take on Martin O Neill’s topsy-turvy Black Cats.

Liverpool star man Luis Suarez celebrates his equalising goal against the Black Cats when the sides met back in September.

Team News:

Liverpool:

  • Fabio Borini (foot) and Martin Kelly (knee) remain Liverpool’s only two long term absentees.
  • Brendan Rogers is likely to name the same side that won 3-0 at QPR on Saturday, though Jose Enrique will have to undergo a late fitness test to keep his place.
  • The Spaniard picked up a hamstring injury at Loftus Road, and has around a 50% chance of featuring this week.
  • Two-goal hero Luis Suarez will once again start up front for the Reds, the Uruguayan is chasing his 14th league goal of the season.

Sunderland:

  • Wes Brown and Lee Cattermole (both knee) are Sunderland’s only definite absentees for the trip to Anfield, both of whom are expected to be out until around February.

  • The Irishman scored the opening goal of the game, but was later replaced by Titus Bramble, who will replace him again if he is unfit.
  • Manager Martin O’Neill will hope to name the same side that narrowly lost to Tottenham, with Steven Fletcher starting alone up front.

Preview: Sunderland vs Tottenham, Sat 12:45

Fresh from a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City on Boxing Day, Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland will be confident of another form book scalp when they welcome Tottenham to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland players celebrate Adam Johnson's decisive strike on Wednesday.

Team News:

Sunderland:

  • Lee Cattermole and Wes Brown (both knee) are the only absentees through injury for the Black Cats. Both players aren’t expected back until around February 2013.
  • Full back Danny Rose is the only other absentee, as he’s ineligible to face Spurs as part of the conditions of his loan switch from White Hart Lane.
  • Manager Martin O’Neill will name the same side that beat Manchester City 1-0 on Boxing Day, with the only exception of Danny Rose, who will be replaced by Phil Bardsley at the back.

Tottenham:

  • Younes Kaboul (knee) and Benoit Assou-Ekotto (fitness) are the only definite absentees for Spurs this weekend.
  • Clint Dempsey (groin) has missed the last two matches with his most recent knock, but he is likely to return and could replace fellow summer signing Moussa Dembele in midfield.
  • Dembele was subbed off in Spurs’ recent 4-0 win over Aston Villa a knee injury, and is a big doubt for the trip North.
  • Scott Parker replaced him on that occasion, as his recovery to full fitness continued.
  • Hat-trick hero from the match at Villa Gareth Bale will start again on the wing for AVB’s side.
