Preview: Arsenal vs Stoke, Sat 15:00

Arsenal showed great spirit to come back from 2-0 down to draw in their midweek game against Liverpool, and they’ll need to show similar hunger if they’re to overcome a stubborn Stoke City side at the Emirates on Saturday.

Arsenal front man Theo Walcott celebrates his decisive equalising strike against Liverpool in midweek.

Team News:

Arsenal:

  • Mikel Arteta (calf), and Kieran Gibbs (thigh) make up the long term injury list for the Gunners.
  • In Gibbs’ place will come new signing Nacho Monreal, who will make his debut after making the switch from Malaga.
  • That change aside, Arsenal are likely to name the same side that drew 2-2 with Liverpool in midweek; with Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott up front.

Stoke City:

  • Marc Wilson (ankle) remains Stoke’s only definite absentee, giving Tony Pulis a full strength squad to choose from this week.
  • Stoke new signing Brek Shea is unlikely to be available following his switch from FC Dallas, as there are still transfer stipulations to overcome for the American.
  • The Potters are likely to name the same side that drew 2-2 with Wigan in midweek, with Jonathan Walters and Peter Crouch once again starting up front.

When these sides met in the Premier League back in August, they played out a rather dull 0-0 draw at the Britannia Stadium, something the teams will hopefully make up for this week.

The Stats:

  • Arsenal have won five and lost just one of their last eight Premier League games against Stoke (D2), with four of those wins coming at the four meetings they have had at Emirates Stadium.
  • Peter Crouch has scored seven Premier League goals against Arsenal; only against Blackburn (8) has he been more prolific.
  • The Potters have won just one of their last 21 Premier League away games (W1 D9 L11).
  • Stoke have conceded 15 goals in their last five Premier League games. They had conceded just 14 in their previous 19 games.
  • The Emirates has witnessed more goals than any other Premier League stadium this season (50).
  • Arsenal have made more errors leading directly to a goal than any other team in the Premier League this season (12).
  • Olivier Giroud has scored five goals in his last three appearances for Arsenal in all competitions.
  • If only the second half of games counted this season Arsenal would be second (46 points), two points behind Manchester City (48).
  • Stoke have drawn more games 0-0 than any other Premier League side this season (5).

Butland snubs Chelsea move for chance at Stoke

19-year-old goalkeeper rejects Chelsea offer in search for "first-team football"

Stoke City last night confirmed the signing of 19-year-old Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland and have loaned him back to the Championship side until the end of the season.

A fee that could rise to £3.5million, the England shotstopper signed a four-and-a-half year deal with the Blues after they announced they would be offloading players to resolve their financial problems.

“I want to help them this season. They have been very good to me,” he said.

After a loan spell at League Two side Cheltenham, Butland was called up to Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad last summer to replace the injured John Ruddy.

Having attracted widespread interest from the likes of Liverpool, Fulham, Newcastle and Manchester City, Butland was subject of a £3.5million move to European champions Chelsea, but the youngster turned it down in order to continue playing first-team football.

A testament to professionalism, Butland – who featured in this summer’s Team GB Olympic squad – said: “I love playing and I don’t want to sit on the bench. For me, it was important I went to a club where I can play and develop my game.”

Best Value Buys for Fantasy Football – Week 24

A rare, full midweek Premier League schedule takes centre stage in Fantasy Football this week, but don’t get caught out and forget those all important transfers! PlayUp’s Fantasy Football guru brings you four more low-cost, high-value players to whip your team into shape this week.

Goalkeeper: £5.1m

Mark Schwarzer (Fulham) vs West Ham (H)

Aussie goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has been one of Fulham’s most consistent performers this season; producing age-defying displays week in, week out for the Cottagers. The 40-year-old has kept four clean sheets, and managed a massive 80 registered saves so far this season. When goal-shy West Ham visit Craven Cottage on Wednesday night, we’re tipping the big stopper to find his fifth clean sheet, and pick up some valuable points in the mean time.

West Ham’s away form has been nothing short of dreadful in recent weeks, the Hammers have scored just 1 goal in their last 6 away matches in all competitions. That goal came in a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal last week, which is hardly something to shout about. In their last 7 away matches, the Irons have lost 6, and drawn 1; the kind of form that has seen them slip towards the wrong end of the table.

Meanwhile, Fulham have lost just 1 of their last 5 matches at home in all competitions, and have tasted defeat just 4 times at Craven Cottage all season against teams higher placed in the table. In Schwarzer, is an experienced goalkeeper that’s guaranteed to pick up valuable points as the season progresses, and for £5.1m he’s a sure bet for financial success too! Snap him up this week to reap the point rewards.

Defender: £5.3m

Sylvain Distin (Everton) vs West Brom (H)

Everton’s no nonsense centre half Sylvain Distin has been instrumental behind the club’s success this season, keeping the Toffees goal intact and firing them up the table with solid performance after solid performance. 5th placed Everton play host to a wobbly West Brom side on Wednesday night, and we expect the Frenchman Distin to lead his side to a clean sheet against the Baggies and to pick up more bargain points for you.

Everton’s home form speaks for itself this season, the club have lost just once at Goodison Park all campaign, making the ground a true Premier League fortress once again. The record gets better against West Brom – the Toffees have lost just 1 of their last 14 home matches against Albion, a record that dates back to 1980. During that impressive 14-match run, Everton kept 8 clean sheets against the Baggies, making it that bit more imposing.

West Brom have failed to record a win in their last 6 matches in all competitions, and it’s something that David Moyes’ side will almost certainly exploit on Wednesday night. Sylvain Distin has lead his side to two consecutive Premier League clean sheets in recent weeks, and he’ll be looking to do so again West Brom. £5.3m for a regular starting, top-5 Premier League defender is a bargain that can’t be missed.

Midfielder: £5.8m

Jonathan De Guzman (Swansea City) vs Sunderland (A)

Swansea City’s status in English football just seems to get better and better. The club have cemented themselves as a solid force in the Premier League, by and large thanks to impressive bargain signings like Dutchman Jonathan De Guzman.

De Guzman, together with fellow attacking midfielder Michu, have been in scintillating form for the Swans this season, firing them up to ninth in the table and earning them a place in the League Cup final. When Michael Laudrup’s men visit Sunderland on Tuesday night, we fully expect De Guzman to enjoy another fruitful evening in the white shirt.

Despite Sunderland’s recent form, the Black Cats’ have still lost 6 of their last 10 home matches in all competitions, winning just 3. Meanwhile, the Swans have been rock-solid away from home, winning 2 and drawing 2 of their last 4 top flight matches on the road.

Jonathan De Guzman has scored 5 goals for the club this season, and has added 5 assists to boot, putting him firmly in the top-15 point scoring midfielders in Fantasy Football. De Guzman netted twice in Swansea’s most recent Premier League match against Stoke, and we wouldn’t put it past the 25-year-old to produce a similarly impressive performance at the Stadium of Light this week.

Forward: £5.0

Kenwyn Jones (Stoke City) vs Wigan Athletic (H)

Stoke forward Kenwyne Jones has deservedly worked his way into the Potters’ starting line-up this season after being second string to Peter Crouch for so long. The 28-year-old’s power, touch, and aerial ability have made him one of Stoke’s most valuable assets of late; and we expect Jones to produce yet another commanding performance when Wigan visit the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Trinidadian striker has played just 9 games of over 25 minutes for Stoke since Peter Crouch picked up his injury, but he’s certainly seized his opportunity with both hands. Jones has scored 3, and grabbed 3 assists in those 9 matches, and he’s now made Crouch the second choice of the powerful striker hierarchy at Stoke.

Stoke’s home form is the sole reason behind the Potters’ impressive climb up the Premier League, winning 5 and losing just 1 of their 11 matches at the Britannia this season. Meanwhile, Wigan’s away form has been somewhat of a contrast, losing 7 and drawing 1 of their 11 fixtures on the road so far.

The Latics have notched up just 1 Premier League win in their last 10 outings, and with powerful strikers like Kenwyne Jones tormenting their back line, that run looks set to continue. Jones is well worth a transfer for such a small fee, and he may well be the best space filler you’ve ever bagged.

Preview: Stoke vs Wigan, Tues 19:45

Struggling Wigan slipped into the relegation zone last week following a poor run of results, but they’ll hope to mount a recovery effort at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday night against a Stoke side that haven’t won at home in four.

Stoke's Jonathan Walters cooley slots home from the penalty spot when these sides met earlier in the season.

Team News:

Stoke City:

  • Marc Wilson (ankle) and Rory Delap (hernia) make up the long term injury list for Tony Pulis’ side.
  • Andy Wilkinson had previously been missing with a back injury, but returned to action in the  1-0 FA Cup loss against Man City on Saturday; the centre back will start once again this week.
  • Geoff Cameron (hamstring) is Stoke’s only other injury concern, he has around a 75% chance of regaining his fitness in time for Tuesday night.
  • Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will return to an otherwise unchanged Stoke side, with Jon Walters and Kenwyn Jones starting up front again.

Wigan Athletic:

  • Antolin Alcaraz (groin), Albert Crusat (knee), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle), Ivan Ramis (knee) and Ben Watson (shin) will once again be unavailable for the Latics this week.

  • Franco Di Santo, James McArthur, Shaun Maloney and Ali Al Habsi will be recalled by Martinez at the Britannia Stadium.

Clash of the great over-achievers in this season’s Premier League this week, as Michael Laudrup’s high flying Swans take on Stoke City.

Stoke striker Peter Crouch stoops to nod Stoke in front against Swansea when they met earlier in the season.

Team News:

Swansea City:

  • The Swans have just one definite absentee ahead of the clash with Stoke – Neil Taylor is out with a broken ankle for the rest of the season.
  • Michael Laudrup is likely to name the same side that drew 0-0 at Goodison Park last week, with Kemy Agustien partnering Michu up front ahead of Danny Graham.
  • Graham has reportedly attracted transfer interest from Sunderland and Norwich in recent weeks, and his future is still yet to be decided.
  • Pablo Hernandez returned to the starting line up after a spell out with a thigh injury, and is likely to start again for the Welsh club. Leaving Wayne Routledge and Jonathan De Guzman on the bench.

Stoke City:

  • Stoke will be without long term absentees Marc Wilson (ankle) and Rory Delap (hernia) once again this week.

Suarez Admits to Diving

At the centre of controversy yet again, Uruguayan confesses to cheating on national television

Confession: Luis Suarez

Back in the limelight for all the wrong reasons, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has again come under scrutiny for revealing he “invented” a foul as his side were drawing against Stoke in their Premier League clash in October.

In an interview with Fox Sports Argentina, the 25-year-old said, “I don’t listen to all the nonsense some people say about me.

“People say I throw myself all the time inside the box,” he added.

“They said that when we played against Stoke, for instance, and in that case they were right,” Suarez admitted.

This news comes just eleven days after Suarez was criticised for a blatant handball in the lead-up to his goal in Liverpool’s narrow FA Cup third round win against Mansfield.

Suarez told Fox, “I’m accused of cheating [in England].”

“The other day I touched the ball with my hand accidentally, and I was criticised because I kissed my hand,” he complained.

Watch Suarez’s dive against Stoke:

On a Rol – Swans secure Belgian Lamah

Swansea add Belgium international on an 18-month loan deal from Spanish strugglers Osasuna

New blood: Roland Lamah

Michael Laudrup’s first signing of the January transfer window has been completed after landing La Liga’s Roland Lamah with the option of making the deal permanent at any time during his loan spell in Wales.

Lamah is ineligible for Wednesday’s FA Cup replay with Arsenal, but will be available for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Stoke.

Ivory Coast-born Lamah made his senior international debut for Belgium in 2009 and has also has plied his trade in the Belgian, Dutch and French top flights.

Deployed as a wide man he will broaden Swansea’s attacking options, joining Kemy Augustien, Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge on the list of first team wingers.

The 25-year-old told Swansea’s official club website: “This is a great opportunity for me and I’m happy to be here.

“I already know that Swansea is a family club that will suit my style of play,” he added.

FA Cup Replay: Stoke City vs Crystal Palace, Tues 19:45

Championship high flyers Crystal Palace failed to break down the stubborn Stoke City in the original tie at Selhurst Park, but will hope to find a way past them at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday, where the Potters shipped 4 goals at the weekend.

Stoke striker Michael Owen in action during a rare start for him in the original tie. The 33-year-old is likely to line up once again for the Potters.

Team News:

Stoke City:

  • Stoke have no fresh injury concerns ahead of their FA Cup third round replay with the Eagles, and may name an unchanged side.
  • Danish stopper Thomas Sorensen should replace Asmir Begovic in goal as Pulis continues his policy of rotating his keepers in the cup competitions.
  • Centre back Robert Huth may be rested after playing every minute of every Premier League game so far this season, in his place will come Matthew Upson.
  • Former England striker Michael Owen could be handed only his second start for the club – he would partner Peter Crouch up front, giving Kenwyn Jones and Jonathan Walters a rest.

Crystal Palace:

  • Manager Ian Holloway will have a few selection problems ahead of the clash against Stoke but is likely to name the same side that lost 1-0 against Burnley at the weekend.
  • Midfielder Owen Garvan (knee) is out until around April while defender Joel Ward (groin) will also sit out.
  • Kagisho Dikgacoi is Palace’s only other definite absentee, as he is away on international duty with South Africa at the African Cup of Nations.

Preview: Stoke vs Chelsea, Sat 15:00

Chelsea fans incurred another dose of disappointment under Rafa Benitez last week after a 2-0 loss to Swansea in the League Cup semi-final. But they’ll look bounce back at a ground that they haven’t lost at since 1975.

Chelsea players celebrate Ashley Cole's late winner against the Potters in September.

Team News:

Stoke City:

  • Marc Wilson (ankle) and Rory Delap (hernia) are Stoke’s only long term absentees through injury.
  • Aside from that, manager Tony Pulis has no concerns and will name a full strength side for the visit of the European Champions.
  • Pulis put out a weakened side in the 0-0 FA Cup clash with Palace last week, but will welcome back some big names on Saturday.
  • Asmir Begovic, Kenwyn Jones, Matthew Etherington and Charlie Adam are all likely to come back into the first team fold.

Chelsea:

  • Fresh from two goals in the FA Cup, and a strong performance as a sub against Swansea, new signing Demba Ba is likely to be handed his Premier League debut for the Blues.
  • Manager Rafa Benitez could name the same side that won 5-1 at Southampton last week, with Fernando Torres taking to the bench.
  • Keeper Petr Cech is likely to miss out once again with a groin injury, so Ross Turnbull will continue to deputise between the sticks.
  • John Terry featured for the under-21s in midweek and will be on the bench tomorrow.
  • Oriol Romeu (knee) is the only other absentee for Chelsea
