The sinister side to Mario Balotelli that will not be missed

Revered for his extravagant yet charitable behaviour off the pitch, the Manchester City striker is not always a resident Premier League crowd pleaser

As Mario Balotelli’s departs from the Premier League, he will be leaving in his wake a sensation of emptiness within the Premier League. But not all of his doings have been something to reflect on with the fondest of memories. Here are a few things we will not be missing as the Italian prepares to leave our shores for sunnier climates.

The Red Cards
Despite offering remarkable talent, at the age of just 22, Balotelli’s temperament on the pitch has never quite matured since his move from the Serie A. Although he has many years ahead of him, his occasional petulant attitude towards his fellow players will not be missed. Receiving his first red card in just his fourth game for the club, Balotelli has racked up a total of four red cards in 74 appearances – the last of which prompted boss Roberto Mancini to condemn his City career – meaning he missed a total of 11 games in all competitions through suspension. Mancini did however play him again and in the season finale against QPR he was on hand to assist Sergio Aguero’s championship winning goal.

That stamp

When Man City met Tottenham at the Etihad in January last year – despite Balotelli’s side winning 3-2 thanks to his last minute penalty – the result was marred by accusations from the Tottenham camp that the controversial striker had earlier stamped on Scott Parker’s head. With the scores level at 2-2 and six minutes of normal time remaining, calmer heads were needed when in the hunt for that vital goal. As Parker lay on the floor after blocking a Balotelli shot in the closing stages of the game, the City man was seen in the replay to consciously aim his landing foot onto the Spurs midfielder. After the incident, Balotelli was hit with a retrospective four-match ban for violent conduct and consistant misdemeanours.

A Frustrating lack of consistency
It’s common knowledge that on his day, Balotelli can be a nightmare for any defence. His exploits against Germany in the semi final of the European championships in Warsaw last year would more than verify that. But his display in the final against Spain reverted back to the sullen Mario Balotelli that we all hate to see. For all his confidence, strength and technical ability he, on so many occasions, seems to suffer from a severe inconsistency issue that causes him to go off the boil and on various occasions he was hauled off by Mancini for poor performances. With a conversion rate of 1 in every 2.5 City games, his scoring ability has rarely been questioned but his attitude on a rainy away day has always been his downfall when squad lists were announced. Making just eight starts for the Blues so far this season, he is his team’s least frequent scoring striker behind Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez. There’s no doubt he was given the chance to shine by those around him, but the choice not to take it was all his own.

On the other hand, see Why the Premier League will miss Mario Balotelli

A repeat of the 2010-11 FA Cup final in the early kick-off on Saturday, with Manchester City hoping for another win over the Potters to book their place in the 5th round.

City players celebrate their 2011 FA Cup win after Yaya Toure's strike sunk the Potters at Wembley.

Team News:

Stoke City:

  • Stoke will once again be without injured trio Marc Wilson (ankle), Rory Delap (hernia), and Andy Wilkinson (back).

  • Peter Crouch and Jonathan Walters started up front on that occasion, leaving Kenwyn Jones and Michael Owen on the bench.

Manchester City:

  • Micah Richards and Maicon (both knee) will miss out yet again through long term injury.

  • Striker Sergio Aguero will return to the starting line up this week, partnering Edin Dzeko in an otherwise unchanged side.

Preview: Manchester City vs Fulham, Sat 15:00

Roberto Mancini’s men can ill-afford a slipup in any match if they’re to catch runaway leaders Manchester United at the top of the Premier League, but they’ll be much fancied to close to gap momentarily against a struggling Fulham side.

City players celebrate Edin Dzeko's last-gasp winner when these sides met at Craven Cottage earlier in the season.

Team News:

Manchester City:

  • Maicon (knee), Micah Richards (knee) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) make up the long term injury list for City.
  • City will be hit with the loss of influential midfielder Yaya Toure to the African Cup of Nations. Yaya, and his centre back brother Kolo, will represent the Ivory Coast in South African this month.
  • Aguero is fit to play again this weekend and Nasri is back from suspension.
  • Manager Roberto Mancini will name the same side that won 2-0 against Arsenal last weekend, with Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez up front.
  • Captain Vincent Kompany was scheduled to be suspended for Saturday’s match after he was sent off at the Emirates last week. However, the Belgian has had his red card rescinded, and will start once again for the champions.

Fulham:

  • Simon Davies (knee), Kerim Frei (hamstring) and Mahamadou Diarra (knee) make up Fulham’s long term injury list.
  • Steve Sidwell (knee) is the only other player with a knock, and has a 50% chance of featuring after missing last week’s 1-1 draw with Wigan.

The Stats:

  • Manchester City are unbeaten in 8 matches against Fulham in all competitions, winning 5 of those games.
  • In the last 17 Premier League meetings between these two sides, City have scored in all of them and Fulham have only failed to score in one game.

City are on the hunt for more silverware

Team News:

Manchester City:

  • Sergio Aguero (hamstring) was subbed off in the win over Stoke on 1/1. He’ll miss the FA Cup match and is “probably doubtful” for next weekend’s Premier League game against Arsenal.

  • Micah Richards (knee), Maicon (knee), Aleksandar Kolarov (hip/thigh) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) will all miss the FA Cup fixture.
  • Mario Balotelli had a bust up with Mancini on the training ground so it will be interesting to see the repercussion of that.

Top 5 Premier League Goals of 2012

The most exciting league in the world treated us to over 1000 goals in 2012, some of which will go down in the history books forever. Here are PlayUp’s pick of the goals from a special year of Premier League football, enjoy!

Robin van Persie vs Fulham (25/08/2012)

Manchester United paid a reported £24 million to land Dutch ace Robin van Persie in the summer, and he’s proving to be worth every penny with 19 goals to his name for the Reds already this season. His first of which came on his home debut against Fulham, and it’s a strike that he’ll remember for the rest of his life. Some way to announce yourself on the scene!

Luis Suarez vs Norwich (28/04/2012)

You can say what you like about Luis Suarez off the pitch, but the facts are that he’s world class at what he does once he steps onto it. The Uruguayan has been a shining light in what’s been a gloomy year for Liverpool, summed up by his incredible hat-trick against Norwich at Carrow Road in April. His third goal, from all of 45 yards, was the pick of the bunch!

Peter Crouch vs Manchester City (24/03/2012)

Back in March, Peter Crouch proved to everyone that he’s not just a bean pole with a head that Stoke lamp their trademark long balls at, he’s actually pretty useful with his feet! His unstoppable volley against champions Manchester City was hailed as goal of the season, and it’s plain and simple to see why.

Glen Johnson vs West Ham (09/12/2012)

When a Premier League player returns to a former club, one of two things can happen: 1) they’re booed with every touch of the ball and they have a stinker, or 2) they show their former employers everything that they’re missing. For Glen Johnson in December, it was the latter. Often criticised for his defensive capabilities, Johnson showed that he has no trouble in the offensive areas with his splendid opener at Upton Park. Take a bow.

Sergio Aguero vs QPR (13/05/2012)

We couldn’t possibly leave this off of the list, Sergio Aguero’s 93rd minute strike to win the title is safely THE iconic goal of the Premier League. In the famous words of Martin Tyler: ‘I swear you’ll never see anything like this again, so watch it, drink it in!’

Preview: Norwich City vs Manchester City, Sat 15:00

After going 12 league matches unbeaten earlier in the year, Norwich are in the middle of a 2 match losing streak; but the Canaries will hope to bounce back against an out of sorts Manchester City team this weekend.

Carlos Tevez slams home one of his 3 goals at Carrow Road last season.

Team News:

Norwich:

  • John Ruddy (thigh), Andrew Surman (knee), Steven Whittaker (hip) are on the long term injury list for the Canaries.
  • Chris Hughton has no other injury worries, and will name the same side that lost 1-0 to Chelsea at Carrow Road on Boxing Day.
  • Grant Holt will start alone up front, with Robert Snodgrass, Anthony Pilkington, and Wes Hoolahan in the supporting roles.

Man City:

  • Micah Richards (knee) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are the only long term absentees for the champions, who will name a strong side at Carrow Road.
  • Mario Balotelli (illness), Gael Clichy (knee), and Samir Nasri (groin) are all on the road to recovery from their absences, and have a 50% chance of featuring this week.
  • Roberto Mancini is likely to name the same side that lost 1-0 at Sunderland on Boxing Day, with Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez once again starting up front.

Preview: Manchester City vs Reading, Sat 15:00

Man City should have no trouble closing the gap on league leaders Man United when bottom club Reading visit the Etihad. A City victory will be the Royals' 7th Premier League loss on the spin.

City players celebrate returning to winning ways at St James' Park last weekend.

Team News:

Man City:

  • Micah Richards (knee) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are City’s only two definite absentees from Saturday’s clash with Reading.
  • Vincent Kompany (groin) and James Milner (hamstring) missed the 3-1 win over Newcastle last week, but they both have a 50% chance of returning this week.
  • Aleksander Kolarov and Samir Nasri both limped off injured in that match, though they both should be fit to face the Royals.
  • Englishman Gareth Barry will return from his one-game suspension this week, and could replace Javi Garcia in central midfield.
  • Argentinean duo Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez will start up front once again for the Champions, who are hot favourites against a struggling Reading side.

Reading:

  • Just Alex McCarthy (shoulder), and Sean Morrison (ankle) make up the long term injury list for the Royals. Morrison, however, is likely to return in the near future and could earn a place on the bench against City.
  • Striker Jason Roberts missed the 5-2 loss against Arsenal on Tuesday with a slight knock, but he is likely to return this week.
  • Reading top scorer Adam Le Fondre came on as a substitute to score against the Gunners, and could be included from the start this week.
  • Winger Jimmy Kebe was the other Reading goal scorer in that match, and will keep his place on the right this week.
  • Brian McDermott is likely to employ a heavily defensive set up at the Etihad Stadium, with the possible formation of 5-1-3-1.

PlayUp’s Top 5 Photos of the Week

We posted them, you liked them. Here are our top five pictures from the past seven days.

Subbuteo enthusiast Terry Lee renacts this famous scene

He hasn’t appeared much on our television screens after his World Cup Final chest-butt on Italian defender Marco Materazzi, but Zinedine Zidane’s retribution will never be forgotten. The Frenchman lashed out at his counterpart after verbal abuse from Materazzi concerning his mother. But rather than going down in the history books for taking his country to their second World Cup in eight years, Zi-Zou has now been immortalized in that chilling pose as a 5 metre high bronze statue outside a French art gallery. We like the Subbuteo version.

Growing up, Gervinho had always dreamed of playing like Nwankwo Kanu.

This miss from Gervinho just before half-time in Arsenal’s dire Capital One Cup performance against Bradford on Tuesday will no doubt have been the final nail in the proverbial coffin for the Ivorian. 1-0 down just before half time, the forward found himself three yards out in front of a gaping net. In real slapstick fashion, the 25-year-old attempted to place the ball home but instead, all he did was slice it wide and end up with a muddy backside. The Gunners were unable to find an equaliser until the 88th minute through Thomas Vermaelen, but the Bantams held their nerve throughout extra time and penalties, winning their ninth consecutive shootout competition. With an apparent £70m sitting in their bank account, surely Wenger will need to dust off his wallet in January.

It's safe to say, a lot of people choose 'commenting' on Ashley Cole is far easier than 'liking' him.

It is very rare as England fans that we get to genuinely claim to have a real contender for ‘best player in the world’ in their given position. He may consider himself as a real sharpshooter when it comes to hairdressers and air rifles, but one thing we can’t take away from Ashley Cole is that he has been a valuable servant at left back for club and country. Considered by many as the best in his field, Cole has made 191 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 7 goals. He is also on the brink of winning his 100th cap for England. Linked with Manchester United, sideburn fanatic and Everton full back Leighton Baines is also tunring heads in the Premier League and for his country. With 2 goals and two assists already this season, he looks fit to take the mantle from Cole when needed.

He'd gone into the shop and asked for 'Aguero'.

There are so many things in this picture that begs the question, “What on Earth is going on?” It’s a miracle in itself that both Manchester United and Manchester City fans can drink a pint of the publican’s finest under the same roof. Whilst everyone else directed their gazes towards the big screen during the Manchester derby last Sunday, one gutsy United fan chose to daub himself in City clobber inscribed with the number ‘19’ – the number of titles won by the Red Devils. With the body language of a frightened minor, we can only imagine the shirt was removed seconds after this photo was taken.

Record Breakers: Muller, Rodriguez and Messi.

2012 – Arguably the most mesmerising year for sporting achievement of all time. It has also generated its fair share of statistical comparison, too. Gold medals and last minute league title winners aside, one person has by far stood out, in the footballing spectrum at least. That man is Lionel Messi. Having now scored 88 goals in a single calendar year, the little Argentine has blitzed ‘der Bomber’ Gerd Muller, his predecessors’ record of 85 goals and still has two more games to play. To top it all off, he’s also eclipsed all-time top Barcelona goalscorer, Cesar Rodriguez in the process. His final game comes three days before Christmas Day against Real Valladolid, who have been reasonably inconsistent this season, let’s hope he can break the 90 mark before the year is out!

Preview: Newcastle Utd vs Man City, Sat 12:45

Manchester City are desperate to put their derby day blues behind them against a Newcastle side that have lost 5 of their last 6 League matches.and gettting dangerously close to the relegation dogfight

Influential midfielder Yaya Toure steers in City's opener at St James' Park last season.

Team News:

Newcastle:

  • Yohan Cabaye (groin), Dan Gosling (ankle), Ryan Taylor (knee), Steven Taylor (hamstring), Haris Vuckic (knee) are on the long term absentee list for the Magpies.
  • French winger Hatem Ben Arfa returned to action for Newcastle against Fulham on Monday following a hamstring injury, scoring in a 2-1 loss.
  • However, Ben Arfa aggravated his injury during the match, and may have suffered another fitness setback. He has a 50% chance of starting.
  • Winger Gabriel Obertan (toe) has been missing since late October, but could make a return to the bench.
  • Alan Pardew will hope to name the same side that lost at Fulham last week, but may have to draft in Sylvain Marveaux as a replacement for Ben Arfa.

Man City:

  • Manchester City could be without their captain Vincent Kompany. The Belgian was withdrawn from the 3-2 loss to Manchester United with a hamstring injury, and is a doubt for the trip to St James’ Park.
  • English duo James Milner and Jack Rodwell are expected to return to full fitness this week, though Rodwell is unlikely to be included. A place on the bench for Milner is likely.
  • Micah Richards (knee) is the only definite, long-term absentee for Mancini’s side. He will be out until mid 2013.
  • Left back Aleksander Kolarov is expected back from his groin injury to face the Magpies, though he’s unlikely to displace Gael Clichy from the team.
  • Gareth Barry will definitely miss out on the match with Newcastle after being handed a 1-match ban for unsportsman like conduct after the Manchester derby last week.
  • Argentinean striker Carlos Tevez will be recalled to the side in place of Mario Balotelli, who played poorly and skulked off in the derby defeat.
