The game was slow to start, with Netherlands seeing the majority of the early possession, but to no avail as they failed to work Andersen in the Danish goal. The first and only goal of the game came in the 24th minute. Denmark’s Krohn-Dehli picked up possession just outside of the penalty area and burst into the box, losing all defenders in the process, and struck a low, left-footed shot through the legs of the Stekelenburg. The first game of the “group of death” ended in a shock 1-0 victory for Denmark against a strong Netherlands side, that had been heavily backed to win this year’s tournament.

From this moment on, the Netherlands went on to produce a number of fantastic opportunities to draw level, but failed to convert any of them. In the 36th minute, Robben struck the post after a ‘keeping howler from Andersen, saw him pass the ball directly to the Dutchman. Afellay went close again with a shot from the edge of the area, but Denmark were the team who created the better chances towards the end and fully deserved their half-time lead.

Michael Krohn-Dehli only scored two goals during Euro 2012 qualification, but did you list him in your PlayUp3Strikers?

In the second half, Netherlands started brightly, creating a number of chances. Captain, Mark van Bommel, saw his long-range effort superbly tipped wide and Afellay struck a shot agonisingly wide of the post. Denmark were showing plenty of resistance, but not a great deal of attacking intent.

The Netherlands looked to take the game to Denmark and in the 70th minute they introduced Rafael van der Vaart and leading goal-scorer, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Within minutes, Huntelaar was presented with a golden chance; he tried to lift the ball over the ‘keeper, but Andersen saved well and then denied Van Persie on the follow-up.

The Dutch had twenty-nine shots, but only managed to get nine of those on target. In the 89th minute, Netherlands had a controversial decision go against them for a penalty, as Jacobsen appears to handle the ball in the box, but the referee waved away all appeals.

Defeat for the Netherlands has certainly left them with a mountain to climb, leaving them requiring positive results against Germany and Portugal in their final two games. However, this fantastic result for Denmark means that they are now in a strong position to go on and progress from the group stages.
