Ferguson looks to keep Mancini and City in the background for now

Mancini vs. Ferguson

The young pretender versus the old master, Mancini has taken Ferguson on at his own mind games and could well win. The United supremo has seen it all before, but in admitting that this is the biggest Manchester derby ever shows how much of a threat City have become. Will Sir Alex go for just one up front to quell City’s midfield threat, or perhaps go bold? Mancini will not be too proud to admit that Aguero and Tevez are now certainties to start. You can’t buy Ferguson’s experience, however. Who has the edge: United Continue reading

A-Z of Pep Guardiola

The life and times of the Barcelona manager

PA-13370867.jpg

Pep covers his greying hair by adopting the Stone Cold Steve Austin look

A – Al-Ahli. The club Pep played with towards the end of his career. Could he feel this would be a nice footballing back water to chill out in until he wants to re-enter the mainstream?

B – Beard. With managers getting cooler, Pep’s beard-ability separated him from the rest. Fuller than Mourinho’s patchy pre-pubescent efforts, but not overbearing like Mike Bassett’s porn star look, Guardiola found the perfect grade on his trimmer. Continue reading

How England lined up in the last qualifier - seven out of 11 make it into our line up

Goalkeeper – Joe Hart

The first name on the team sheet, Hart’s form for Manchester City this season has been exemplary, and he could yet be a league winner by the time the tournament starts. A worrying lack of depth in this department, however. Continue reading

Torres and co. endear themselves with valiant display

Fernando Torres celebrates the goal that sealed Chelsea's path to the Champions League final

In the film Shallow Hal, the main character is a chauvinist pig who only talks to beautiful women. He judges anyone who is not, by his reckoning, perfect, and mocks the ‘ugly’ ones. Hal is eventually put under some sort of hypnosis or voodoo trick, where he sees the beauty within all people, falling in love with a fat suit wearing Gwyneth Paltrow. Last night was the English public’s Shallow Hal moment. Continue reading

Brilliance of Barca hide improvements of English game

The wonder of Barcelona should not make us think that the English game is back to the dark days of the 80’s and 90’s when route one football prevailed. That is what Wimbledon talked about and why they so lauded the so-called box-to-box players.

The strengths of English clubs has been overshadowed by Barcelona's dominance in Europe

These were more like runners than footballers, and would charge from their penalty box to that of the opposition hoping to connect their head with a long ball that had been floated over most of the field. The idea was that in the mayhem created by all these players trying to head the ball, there would be so much confusion that they might score a goal. Once that was done it was back to their own penalty box, kick every dangerous ball to row 52 and in the end emerge one-nil winners. Continue reading
